The best way to get to know a neighbourhood is to wait for morning to arrive there. In Galata, morning is the hour of rolling shutters, the first scent of coffee and light falling on the tower. Meroddi’s three venues offer this hour in three distinct ways — the one you choose depends on the kind of person you wish to be that morning.
1. In a garden overlooking the tower: Barnathan Garden
For those with nowhere to rush. A buffet breakfast in the historic garden of the Barnathan Apartments, dating back to 1892, with Galata Tower before you. Local cheeses, preserves and hot dishes — the kind of table you settle into and linger over.
There is one detail that makes weekends special: at the Garden, live music accompanies breakfast from 10:30 onwards. In the evenings, there is live music every night except Monday — so the garden plays at both ends of the day.
2. Above the panorama: Barnathan Roof
For those who put the view first. On the terrace of the same building, breakfast comes with Galata Tower, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus all in view at once. Service here is à la carte: you choose your own plate, creating a quiet morning rather than navigating a crowded buffet. For photographs, the best time is early morning, when the light strikes the tower from the side.
3. In the rhythm of the street: Lattas
For those who want to be part of the neighbourhood. Right on Serdar-ı Ekrem, Lattas offers seating both indoors and at street-side tables, and is open daily from 08:00 to 23:00. One of the few cafés in Galata serving a buffet breakfast, it also offers individual dishes throughout the day — including hot breakfast, vegan breakfast and Eggs Benedict. So even if you miss the morning, you do not miss breakfast.
It takes its name from Ömer Lütfi Lattas Pasha, who gave the street above its title — a lovely story to read while waiting for your coffee.
