      Meroddi Bağdatlıyan Hotel

Built between 1895 and 1905, this elegant apartment building takes its name from its first owner, Ohannes Bağdatlıyan, director of the Bureau of Nations at the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Restored in 2014 with full respect for its historic character, the building lives on as a boutique hotel with French-influenced architecture. The hotel sits on a quiet street just a two-minute walk from Galata Tower — close to the energy of İstiklal, away from its noise. A rich open-buffet breakfast is served each morning; parking is available across the street, and Şişhane metro is a few minutes away. With its panoramic common areas and marble-detailed rooms, Bağdatlıyan is a comfortable stop inside history for travellers who want to feel Galata's cosmopolitan past.

      The Bağdatlıyan Apartments

The twin buildings that make up the hotel were constructed between 1895 and 1905 on what was then Karanfil Street — today's İlk Belediye Avenue; in old records both buildings appear as the "Bağdatlıyan Apartment". They were commissioned by Ohannes Bağdatlıyan, an Istanbulite of Armenian origin who held senior posts in the Ottoman bureaucracy. Like other wealthy figures of his era he never lived here himself; the apartments were designed as modern rental homes of their day — original examples of the apartment tradition of Galata and Pera.

The avenue's present name is a story in itself: an iron bridge once stretched from the upper floor of the Sixth Municipal Office on Şişhane Square (1879-1883) to this street, connecting Pera to the municipal building at level — the name "İlk Belediye" (First Municipality) Avenue is thought to come from that link. The bridge is gone today; its name lives on in the street.

Today Meroddi Bağdatlıyan keeps these two historic buildings alive under their original name, together with the character of their quiet street.

      Galata: Old Soul, New Rhythm

Galata has witnessed centuries unfold — from merchants arriving by sea to artists filling its cobbled alleys with music and color. Once the crossroads of old Constantinople’s trade routes, it drew travelers from every corner of the world, each leaving a trace in its language, architecture, and spirit. The streets still carry those echoes — the sound of laughter spilling from a café, the scent of fresh simit at dawn, the soft glimmer of the Bosphorus between historic facades.
