The apartments of Galata Flats stand within the historic apartment fabric that took shape in Galata at the end of the 19th century. Home to a Genoese colony from 1267, Galata became the financial centre of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century and pioneered apartment living; modern urban practices arrived here first — the streets were lit with gas lamps in 1857, and the houses were numbered in 1858.
