      Meroddi La Porta

Taking its name from the Italian word for "door", La Porta carries the legacy of medieval Galata's fortress gates — stepping through those gates, which were closed at night, meant leaving the noise of the day outside the walls. A one-minute walk from Galata Tower, it is an intimate boutique hotel with only a handful of rooms. The hotel's panoramic rooftop terrace captures Galata Tower, the medieval Genoese walls, Hagia Sophia, the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Golden Horn in a single frame — one of the rare spots in the city where you can have breakfast against the skyline of Istanbul. Offering flexible stays with fully equipped apartments alongside its traditional rooms, La Porta is minutes on foot from Karaköy, İstiklal Avenue and Şişhane metro — an ideal base for exploring Galata on foot.

      Galata, City of Gates

From the 13th century onwards, the Genoese dug moats fifteen metres wide in front of the Galata walls to guard against attacks from land. The city was entered through gates that rose above these moats and were closed at night for safety. Porta Comego, Porta Chiera, San Antonio... Each gate had a name, and a story told through the inscriptions and coats of arms above it.

Our hotel stands among the buildings closest to the site of one of the largest of these moats — Büyük Hendek, "the Great Moat", whose name the street still carries today. In this spot at the very foot of Galata Tower, one of the gates in the walls most likely stood just a few steps from where we are now.

La Porta — Italian for "the door" — takes its name from this heritage. In medieval Galata, passing through the gate meant leaving the noise of the day outside the walls. Our promise to guests crossing La Porta's threshold today is the same: leave the weight of the city at the door.

      Galata: Old Soul, New Rhythm

Galata has witnessed centuries unfold — from merchants arriving by sea to artists filling its cobbled alleys with music and color. Once the crossroads of old Constantinople’s trade routes, it drew travelers from every corner of the world, each leaving a trace in its language, architecture, and spirit. The streets still carry those echoes — the sound of laughter spilling from a café, the scent of fresh simit at dawn, the soft glimmer of the Bosphorus between historic facades.
