The name Lattas derives from the Christian name of Ömer Lütfi Lattas Pasha, who served with the rank of Serdar-ı Ekrem (current chief of staff) during the Ottoman period. Born in Austrian territory as a Serbian Orthodox Christian, Michael Lattas fled to Ottoman Bosnia in 1827. Taking the name Ömer Lütfi, he converted to Islam and joined the army, while taking an active role in suppressing many anti-imperial rebellions, he also won important victories in the Crimean War. Thus, he had the chance to lead the Ottoman army as Serdar-ı Ekrem.

The street where Lattas Coffee and Galata Mansion are located was named Serdar-ı Ekrem Street in memory of Ömer Lütfi Pasha in the 20th century.
